She can't be the partner her lover wants her to be, feeling too messed up to show up for them. "Self-hatred is a god complex sometimes, where you think you're the most f---ed-up person who's ever lived," she explained. "Straight up, you're not. And it can make people behave really selfishly, and I love each of our interpretations of that concept."
  
  Julien Baker added, "That's another example of Phoebe taking a wordplay and then extrapolating it to a really nuanced concept."

  The band consistently explores the theme that women are undervalued simply because of their gender. Men are depicted as god-like beings occupying the highest echelon of the spiritual hierarchy, while women are relegated to inferior angelic roles. In fact, their band name, "boygenius," satirizes the common practice of excessively praising men.
• "Not Strong Enough" ends with Dacus leading the final chorus. By going solo, she indicates she may be moving towards a greater understanding.
• The song started when Phoebe Bridgers started riffing on the idea of the conflicted emotions of self-loathing and narcissism. "We're like how fun would it be to write like The Cure, Slash, The Killers pop song about feeling both self-hatred and God complex," she told BBC Radio 1's Claro Amfo.
• "Not Strong Enough" is the most collaborative track on The Record. "That song was written more in the room together," Julien Baker confirmed. "Some of the other songs were like, 'Hey, I wrote this complete song'. And it would be cool if we added these little parts and then we like polished it in the studio, but this song felt very much like a group project."
