Songfacts®:

  • Here, Lady A join Breland for a tale of a guy who uses booze to numb the pain of heartbreak. Breland and Lady A's Charles Kelley front the sultry R&B jam.
  • The song puts a fresh spin on the classic lyrical tale of using alcohol to smooth a breakup. Breland starts off the song with an account of how drink played a part in all the important events of the relationship. Once they split, he continues to imbibe to erase the memories of their time together.
  • Breland and Charles Kelly co-wrote "Told You I Could Drink" with songwriter Zachary Manno (Haley Mae Campbell's "Never Been In Love").
  • Breland recorded "Told You I Could Drink" for his full-length debut album, Cross Country. The artist has made a name for himself as one of country music's most regular collaborators, having worked with the likes of Thomas Rhett ("Praise The Lord"), Keith Urban ("Throw It Back," "Out The Cage"), and Dierks Bentley ("Beers On Me"). However, Breland wanted to limit the features on his record to meaningful ones. Working with Lady A was high on his list, as the trio were one of the acts that introduced him to country music. "When I finally got in the studio with Charles Kelley, I already had a Lady A collab in mind," he said.
  • Breland and Kelley debuted the song at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville during the April 12, 2022 Breland & Friends benefit show. "The response that we got from the audience was what convinced us to cut the song and put it on my album. I'm so excited for the world to hear what we made," Breland said.
  • Kelley's Lady A bandmates, Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood, enthusiastically jumped on board. "When I first heard this song, it immediately took me back to high school after a bad breakup, getting lost in an R&B groove," said Scott.
