Songfacts®:

  • "Drink With You" is a twangy reminder that human beings, despite our lofty aspirations and internet-enabled calendars, will forever be terrible at resisting exes when alcohol is involved.
  • The story unfolds with Brett Young getting that familiar text from his ex offering to meet for a drink. Most guys would just accept the booty call, but Young is conflicted because he knows it will lead to romantic regret. That doesn't mean he's going to turn down the offer though.

"'Drink With You' is a song about exes that can't seem to make good decisions when they get together and there is alcohol involved," he said.
  • It's an old story, as ancient as campfires, and Young tells it with an affectionate shrug. The song tiptoes into the same risky territory Chris Stapleton charted with "You Should Probably Leave," but Young's approach is less cautious. He's not exactly trying to avoid disaster; he's practically sending it a polite RSVP. It also compares with Lady A's "Need You Now" which is about a lonely late-night tipsy call that everyone knows is a terrible idea but happens anyway.
  • Young wrote "Drink With You" with Emily Weisband (BTS' "Boy With Luv," Hillary Scott & The Scott Family's "Thy Will"), Jesse Frasure (Jon Pardi's "Dirt on My Boots," Chris Lane's "Fix") and former The Voice contestant Tony Lucca.
  • Produced by Jimmy Robbins, "Drink With You" marks a small but notable shift for Young, best known for his polished love ballads like "In Case You Didn't Know" and "Here Tonight." This time around he trades in some of the studio gloss for something more organic: acoustic guitars, pedal steel and banjo.
