  • Brett Young co-wrote this romantic song with Nashville songwriters Trent Tomlinson and Tyler Reeve. They penned it during a writer's retreat at Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

"Trent started telling us a story about something his mom always did growing up," Young said in a behind-the-scenes video. "He said every time he'd leave the house, she'd stop him on his way out the door and say, 'Hey Trent, in case you didn't know, I love you.' And me and Tyler both looked at each other and we were like, 'Well, we gotta write that song.'"
  • The simple performance video was filmed at the historic Tivoli Theatre in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Young told ABC Radio that he was careful to make the promo's imagery fairly ambiguous.

"We don't want to tell so much of a story that anybody that wants to make it their story feels alienated," he said. "And so, same thing with the video. We picked a beautiful theater in Chattanooga, and it's me and my guitar."

"There is a girl for a moment in it, but it's more about the idea of the girl," Young added with a smile, "so that people can continue to make that their story, and hopefully put it in a bunch of weddings in 2017."
  • Brett Young told The Boot that he, Tomlinson and Reeve wanted to write a song that applied to a wide range of people.

"It ended up being a love story that we wrote, and we wanted everybody to be able to make it their love story," he said. "So we just kept it really simple and said what we would like to say to the person that we love, or we would like to hear back from the person that we love."
  • The eight-day trip to Puerto Vallarta was split into two, with a different group of writers coming for four days each. Brett Young recalled during a media session this was penned on the last day after Trent Tomlinson started scrolling through song ideas on his phone and telling stories.

"Basically his mom would stop him every time he'd leave the house and say, 'Hey Trent, in case you didn't know, I love you,'" the singer said.

At that point the trio got down to work on the concept. "I think once we identified that the song wasn't about Trent's mom and it was actually going to be a twist on how poor of a job men do at expressing their feelings," Young remembered. "I think the song was written and tracked in two-and-a-half hours."
