Songfacts®:

  • "Not Yet" finds Brett Young describing a night of passion with a new love interest.

I know the stars are gonna leave us the later it gets
I know the moon is gonna disappear into the west
I know the sun is gonna come and steal your silhouette
But not yet, no, not yet

Young is so in the moment with his lover, he wishes he could press a pause button so the moment never ends. The singer described the song to Apple Music as "a celebration of how exciting new love can feel."
  • He released the sexy ode on April 23, 2021. While some of Young's previous singles such as "Catch," and "Lady" were inspired by his relationship with his wife Taylor, this is more of a generic love song.
  • Young wrote "Not Yet" with Nashville songwriters Justin Ebach and Kelly Archer. The singer previously collaborated with Ebach and Archer on his 2016 breakthrough single "Sleep Without You."
  • Dan Huff supplied the uptempo pop country production. Huff has served as Lane's producer since his eponymous debut album.
  • Brett Young admitted to The Boot that a high portion of his singles have been ballads, so he knew it was time to switch it up for his follow-up to "Lady" and come up with a feel-good summer song that "isn't too heady, not too deep."

With that in mind, Young, Justin Ebach and Kelly Archer came up with "Not Yet," which is "about those moments in your life that you wish never had to end."

Young added that it's a relatable concept. "Everybody can pick and choose and plug in that one life experience that they have that this song makes them think about."
