Songfacts®:

  • Brian Owens is a St. Louis-born soul singer who is joined by his band the Deacons of Soul on the album Soul of Ferguson, named for the suburb where he was born and raised. Owens toured as an opening act for Michael McDonald, a fellow native of Ferguson, and invited the former Doobie Brother to join him on "For You," the album's lead single.

Owens had been singing the Motown-inspired tune during a soundcheck when it caught McDonald's interest, prompting him to turn it into a duet. "He killed it," Owens said in a 2017 Songfacts interview. "To the point where I had to go back and redo my vocal."
  • The uplifting track sounds like a romantic love song about undying devotion, but it's actually about something greater. "The content is really about transcendent love, love of God," Owens explains.
