Songfacts®:

  • Tony Hiller formed Brotherhood of Man in 1969, and the following year they had their first hit with "United We Stand." Hiller, who wrote this song with group members Lee Sheriden and Martin Lee, told us: "Angelo, very simply, was based on perhaps the greatest love story of all time, Romeo and Juliet. The beautiful young daughter of the richest man in the country and the handsome laborer working on the estate - they died for love." (Here's our full Tony Hiller interview.)
  • Lead vocals on this song were by Sandra Stevens and Nicky Stevens, who were the unrelated female singers in the group at the time. The first version of Brotherhood of Man disbanded in 1972, and an entirely new group was formed under Hiller's direction.
