Songfacts®:

  • This mellow Springsteen song finds him at a wedding, first looking in from the outside, then on the dance floor. We're not sure if the guy in the song is the groom or just imagining he's the one getting married. Springsteen has said it's about second chances.
  • "Book Of Dreams" is part of Springsteen's Lucky Town album, made a few years after he broke up the E Street Band. He played all the instruments himself except drums, which are by Gary Mallaber. It's a lesser-known song in his catalog, played live only a handful of times.
  • Steve Miller beat Springsteen to the title: Miller's 1977 album is called Book Of Dreams.
  • Dion DiMucci, known for '60s hits like "Runaround Sue" and "Abraham, Martin and John," covered this on his 2000 album Deja Nu. Springsteen is a fan of Dion's and added to the liner notes.
