Songfacts®:

  • This song was recorded in mono instead of stereo. Like many of Phil Spector's songs, it was produced with a big sound and lots of reverb. >>>

  • Features Clarence Clemons on sax. After a budding football career ended with an injury, Clemons focused on music, met Springsteen at a club in New Jersey, and became the most popular member of The E Street Band.
  • Incorporates Bo Diddley's trademark beat. Springsteen would sometimes lead into this at concerts with part of Diddley's "Who Do You Love?" or "Mona."
  • Used as the B-side of "Tenth Avenue Freeze-out." On the album, it follows the title track.
  • This is probably Springsteen's most traditional love song. In songs like "Thunder Road" and "Rosalita," he sings of coming to take his girl away to a better place.

  • Fifi from Venice FloridaMy favorite Bruce Springsteen song. Although not completely complimentary to the girl. It speaks to me of a motivated young musician not ready to settle down and give up his quest to become a successful rockstar songwriter performer. That would 'break' him so he goes ahead onward into his fate without her. A lovely song with the Bo Diddley beat, and great to dance to. I give it a 99%!
  • Derek from Great Barrington, MaBeen listening to this live for 30 years. It never, ever gets old.
  • Lisa from Pgh, PaHeard this song was written about Bruce's girlfriend at the time, Karen Darvin.
  • João Sousa from Porto, PortugalIt may very well be the best on Born To Run. It is that damn good.
  • Brian from Chalfont, PaThis song is very underated!!! Talk about a singing with emotions. The pure rawness of the vocals says it all.
  • Curtis from Cornwall On Hudson , NyAmen...on any other album it would be the best track!
  • Grayson from Cleveland, Ohvery underated song.
