Songfacts®:

  • Here, Bryson Tiller details his growing feelings towards a girl. Though they started off as just friends, Tiller's emotions towards her developed over time. Problem is she already has a man, leaving the singer with a moral dilemma.
  • The song was co- produced by Atlanta-born producer Gravez, who also contributed to Bryson Tiller's Trapsoul track "502 Come Up". He worked on the song alongside Swiff D, who is the in house producer for the rap trio Pac Div.
  • The song features a sample of New York neo soul singer Tweet's "My Place" off her 2002 album Southern Hummingbird. Gravez first heard Tweet's album as a Freshman in college: "There was this really sick store that had opened up near my campus called 2nd & Charles, and you could literally buy anything there," he recalled to Genius. "They had this one specific section of records that people traded in for a couple bucks. I ended up spending like $20 on a few records and one of them happened to be Southern Hummingbird by Tweet. Shout out to the person that traded in that record. As soon as I got home, I made four or five whack beats that ended up being lost in the dark corners of my desktop forever."

It took several years for Gravez unfinished idea to become part of a song. He recalled: "In 2014 the homie Swiff D asked if I had any ideas for him to work on. I ended up scrambling through unfinished projects because I had an exam the next day that I didn't even study for (Yes, I failed it). For some reason I ended up throwing in one of the 'whack' unfinished ideas in and he turned it into a banger which eventually became 'No Longer Friends.'"

Gravez learned a valuable lesson from this whole experience. "If there is one thing I could stress to producers it's to never delete anything no matter how old it is," he told Genius. "Every beat has a home."
