Songfacts®:

  • Here, Bryson Tiller takes a romantic interest in a woman who's newly single following a toxic relationship. The girl's former romantic partner has been calling her phone, so Tiller encourages her to resist his entreaties. He tells her to let her ex know it's his fault he doesn't want to see her anymore, and she's enjoying her life "outside."
  • Tiller admits that the girl has plenty of men to choose from now and stakes his claim. As the song progresses, the singer uses repetition more and more to exhibit his craving for her.
  • "Outside" samples the throbbing bass and finger snaps from Ying Yang Twins' 2005 single, "Wait (The Whisper Song)."
  • Bryson Tiller wrote "Outside" with the song's producers Vinylz, Jack Uriah, Neil Dominique, and Wow Jones. Their instrumentation creates an euphoric atmosphere over the Ying Yang Twins' raunchy tune.
  • The song marks Tiller's first new material since his 2021 holiday EP A Different Christmas. "'Outside' is the polar opposite of what everyone is used to hearing from me," said the R&B singer. "Normally we would release a song intended to put people deep in their feelings, but this song is ANTI-FEELS."
