A world-quaking South Korean boy band, BTS stands for "Bangtan Sonyeondan," a Korean phrase that translates literally to "Bulletproof Boy Scouts." When they conquered English-speaking markets, they repurposed the acronym to mean "Beyond The Scene."
They were assembled by the South Korean company Big Hit Entertainment in 2013, which is run by the impresario "Hitman" Bang (real name: Bang Si-hyuk). Thanks to the group, he became the first entertainment mogul in South Korea to become a billionaire.
Big Hit went public in 2020 at a valuation of $822 million. Each member of BTS was granted 68,385 shares, making them each millionaires after the IPO.
Unlike most boy bands, the group does a lot of their own writing and producing. Their lyrics often express their emotions, and sometimes challenge the strictures of society - something rarely heard in South Korean pop music.
With a massive, multicultural fan base and pressure from touchy governments, BTS are very careful in their words, offering anodyne answers to interview questions so as not to offend. They keep their message positive and maintain a sense of harmony in the band, which goes over well with their fans.
Their fans are known as ARMY. They are substantial and well organized, often funding charity projects at the behest of the group. They've raised millions for causes like clean drinking water and education.
The oldest member is Jin, who on December 4, 2020 turned 28, the age when South Korean men are required to enlist for military service. To keep the band together, South Korea's Parliament passed a law allowing K-pop stars who have received medals for elevating the country's cultural influence to defer service until age 30.
BTS' March 29, 2021 plea to their followers worldwide to #StopAsianHate was the most retweeted tweet of 2021.
RM's initials stand for Rap Monster. His real name is Kim Nam-Joon.
V is ambidextrous, meaning he can write with both his hands.
It was Suga who encouraged Jimin to join BTS. "When I first joined the agency as a trainee, I didn't have any ambition to be on the team, because I didn't think it was my team, Jimin explained on Suga's Suchwita' talk. "But it was because of you [that I changed my mind]."
"I still remember the lights were off, and we were in our bed," he added. "I think we woke up because Namjoon was snoring, and you were on the top bunk. As you looked down towards me, and you said, 'You're a good singer, so I really want you to be on our team.' That was when my ambition sparked."
All seven BTS members completed South Korea's mandatory military service, which requires all able-bodied men to serve 18–21 months, with no exemptions for cultural figures. Jin enlisted first in late 2022, and Suga was the last to be discharged on June 21, 2025. BigHit Music's 2022 decision that the members would serve without seeking exemptions was widely praised as an act of patriotism, and the staggered enlistments of all seven, including Suga's alternative social service role, ultimately cleared the way for a full group reunion and 2026 comeback.
All seven members reunited onstage for the first time since 2022 on July 1, 2025, in a joint Weverse livestream. BTS released their comeback album, Arirang, on March 20, 2026 (their first group album since Be in 2020) accompanied by a free comeback concert at Seoul's Gwanghwamun Square, livestreamed globally on Netflix.
Suga's real name is Min Yoon-gi. His stage name is derived from the American boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard. Widely regarded as one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters of all time, Leonard won world titles across five weight classes between 1979 and 1988.
In combat sports, technically gifted strikers with exceptional footwork and precision are nicknamed "Suga." During a Wired interview on the Arirang press tour in 2026, Suga credited Big Hit Music founder Bang Si-Hyuk with suggesting the name, explaining that Bang was a passionate boxing fan who felt the term suited a technically skilled MC.
