Songfacts®:

  • Buffy Sainte-Marie is one of the most controversial songwriters of her generation, but there is nothing controversial about this autobiographical ballad, the title track of her 1968 album, which sees her longing to return to her country roots. She did indeed enter higher education as in the song, earning a PhD in Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts on academic merit and subsequently being awarded a number of honorary law degrees.

Running 2:59, this uncharacteristically commercial and uptempo song which was released as a single on the Vanguard label didn't exactly set the charts alight, reaching just #98 in the US. >>>

  • Sainte-Marie sang this during a guest appearance on Sesame Street in 1978, with help from backing vocalists Gladys the Cow and Patty the Pig. The singer appeared on the program several times throughout the mid-'70s to early '80s.
