Burial

Burial Artistfacts

  • August, 1979
  • Burial (real name: William Emmanuel Bevan) was the first artist to be signed to label Hyperdub, run by Steve Goodman (producer Kode9).
  • Bevan has never considered himself a musician, but realized after listening to rave music styles (notably Drum & Bass) that he didn't have to be one to make tracks.
  • Bevan says he designs his tracks to have a similar feel to a "space in London, but also a space in a club or in your head." His "car test" involves playing a track on a car stereo while driving through London at night.
  • Bevan despises musicianship, and sees it as the enemy of his music-making: "If my tunes sounded like Herbalizer or some s--t, I'd shoot myself."
  • Burial does not DJ, has never played live, and claims he never will. In a 2007 interview with the UK's Guardian newspaper, Bevan revealed that "only five people" knew he made music: "I've had times when I've had mates sitting next to me and they've put my tunes on without knowing."
  • Bevan went to Elliott School in South London, where Kieran Hebden (the electronic producer known as Four Tet) also attended. In 2013, rumors circulated and escalated on social media asserting that Burial and Four Tet were in fact the same person.
