Songfacts®:

  • Bush Lead singer Gavin Rossdale wrote "Comedown" about his ex-girlfriend, Suze DiMarchi. She was lead singer of a band called Baby Animals.

As you can tell from the lyric, it was a complicated relationship, with highs that felt like riding a cloud, but also the inevitable comedown.
  • Rossdale had written songs with other people, but this was the first one he wrote on his own. It gave him a lot of confidence and inspired him to keep writing.
  • Rossdale said of this song: "It was written in the context of half regret, half celebration and just being objective about the situation of coming down from that high and dealing with those intense emotions."
  • Reflecting on this song in 2017, Rossdale told Entertainment Weekly: "I liked the idea of euphoria. But having that euphoria has a comedown. It's inside your brain and just says, 'I'm having the greatest time, and I don't want to stop.' But most of the time, people lose that zone and it changes and you're like, 'No, I didn't want this.' And that's such a common feeling. I watched it being sung every night - it's one of the songs where I can step back and let the people sing. It's the best feeling in the world as a songwriter."
  • The video was directed by Jake Scott, who used perspective and other camera tricks to create some odd optics, as the viewer sees the band performing as if looking through a peephole.
  • Tennis legend Serena Williams found herself singing "Comedown" with Gavin Rossdale in 2025 on the first episode of his video streaming series Dinner With Gavin Rossdale. Rossdale is a foodie who loves to cook, and he also loves good conversation. All of those things combine on the show, whose first season guests also include Tom Jones, Common and Selma Blair.

Sooo the fact that Gavin Rossdale said the song is about his girlfriend makes no nevermind to you, huh? LOL. As a recovered opioid addict I gotta say it's disturbing (and irresponsible) to see someone so publicly heavily romanticize opioid use, especially since there's young people on this thread... even one as young as 13... or they were at the time they commented. Yes, the high obviously feels good or people wouldn't get addicted to it. HOWEVER, you fail to mention how it absolutely wrecks your life and coming down isn't just a little harsh... it's absolute hell! Like, as in wanting to unalive oneself BAD! Better to never know that high... especially that first high, because you always chase it & will never find it again... and then you're stuck feeling nothing but horribly dope sick & then have to cope with the withdrawals and your body breaking down.

Don't ever start doing drugs folks! It's never worth the terror & hell that follows, and no euphoria (which never lasts anyway) is worth dying for!
  • Eddie from ChicagoAre YOU guys high?? It clearly states (on THIS site!) that he wrote it about his ex-girlfriend. Also: https://bit.ly/3VUgu02
  • Wanda from PhillyThis is my all time favorite song.. I'm 50 now & it still gives me goosebumps.. not to mention he's Sexy AF singing it
  • Mark this is my favorite song i an 13 and i have been lising to it ever since my dad died when i was seven
  • Sean Hines from California It's obviously about heroin. Not only does the song describe an opiate high and 'comedown' in the lyrics, but it even says "shoot up" several times in the bridge. I don't care what Bush said about the song. Not to mention the toon just has that 'feel' to it. It is possible it has a double meaning, perhaps comparing smack to love, but the song is undoubtedly about shooting up smack and not wanting to come down from it. I can totally relate to the part where he says "took me so long to find out what need"; it's that feeling when you first try opioids and realize that's exactly the drug you were looking for. All that emotional pain is just irrelevant, covered my overwhelming waves of euphoria. Oh the nostalgia, brings back the memories....
  • Zero from The Abyss, NjThis song reminds me of Bipolar disorder. (aka manic depression) When you're manic you never want to come back down from that natural high but you have to sometime, if you try to fight it, you'll just cause yourself anxiety.
  • Tarah from Trinity, NcThis song is in the movie Fear starring Mark wahlberg and Reese witherspoon
  • Candace from Long Beach, CaI agree with everyone who believes ppl should just go by their own interpretation of the song. I fell in love this year. And Comedown was the first song of my love story. This song meant Cloud 9 to me everytime I listened to it. I'm no longer with the person I'm in love with, but he's very much apart of my life still, and I'm still very much in love with him. "I don't wanna come back down from this cloud, it's taken me all this time to find out what i needed." Best part of the song. No matter what happens, Jesse has always made me feel like I was on Cloud 9, and I never wanna comedown.
  • Brandon from Bainbridge, NyAbsolutely about getting high. This song is especially easy to understand when your high yourself. Theres a strong sense of happiness when your high, and the comedown is an expression used for saying comming back to the reality of whatever situation. And in this situation, he didnt wanna.
Truly a happy/sad song. And one of my favorites.
  • Haeley Hundley from Cincinnati, Ohomg this is my favorite song i have liked it since my dad used to play it and sing it to me when i was a little kid. im only 15 and this song just speaks to me and moves me in way you could never imagine. this is my theme song. im not even lying or anything. this song is truely ispiring. Bush is the best!
  • Jon from Enumclaw , WaOne of my all time faverate songs. It's very soothing to me.
  • Kayla from Oklahoma City, OkAwesome freaking song... one of my favorites. Probably the best Bush song, although "Glycerine" and "Mouth" are really good, too.
  • Ashley from Sandy, OrIt is totally about doing heroin. Almost every line he sings in that song is describing syptoms of being high on heroin.
  • Phoebe from Belchertown, MaThis song always makes me think of sex, for reasons of which I am almost unsure.
  • Hayley from Melbourne, AustraliaIt was confirmed by Gavin Rossdale and other band member that its actually about falling inlove with GETTING HIGH! That is their own interpritation! But when will you guys learn that with most emotional music and metophorical writing should be interprated to your own experience... it doesnt matter what the writer is talking about as long as it helps you with your own issues, you shouldnt take a bands meaning of their own song as gospel

  • Kane from Wytheville, VaI STILL DONT WANNA COME DOWN FROM THAT F###IN CLOUD
THAT SONG PUTS MY MIND TO EASE
  • Arron from Lafayette, InI love this song it is by far the best ever writen along with Everlong by the foo fighters but I thought this song was about something GREAT his g/f must have been wonderfull but now hes with Gwen Stuffainy cant get any better than that... awesome job describing the sex in the song, to Paul whom thinks this song is about finding yourself and knowing who you are???do you even listen to the song??? and nick the song isn't all about the course DO YOU LISTEN TO THE VERSE? HE IS ON CLOUD 9 FOR CRYING OUT LOUD CLOUD 9 MEANS YOUR HAPPY...love and hate, cut me right back down to size, then he says SLEEP GOOD DAY, when I have sex I sleep like a baby I love that part
  • George from Jackson, NjHEY everyone, the actual lyrics are shoot up, shoot up, shoot up your high, im sorry but duh
  • Malysah from Champaign, Ileven though this song is supposedly about his ex-girlfriend, it can still have different meanings to different people (lol well obviously, but anyways...). to me this song is about COCAINE. :/
  • Terry from Houston, TxTo Nick In Paramus....The Lyrics you are refering to say, "cheer up, Cheer up, Cheer up, Don't Cry". Although, being a recovering addict, I see alot of lyrics in this song that can be interpreted as lyrics about being addicted and not wanting to crash.
  • Nate from Aurora, Ilgood stuff...man, i wish they were still together
  • Eric from Grande Prairie, Alberta, CanadaI feel that this song is about being a relationship that you know is failing, yet you don't want to not be in love. You kind of fool yourself into thinking things aren't as bad as they seem, even though part of you knows the truth.
  • Anessa from Bremerton, WaI actually have put alot of thought into what I think this song means. I think that it is about the end of a relationship. "I don't want to come back down from this cloud" I interpret as like cloud 9; something that feels so good. "it's taken me all this time to find out what I need" to me is like finding yourself through a relationship, only to "come down" into a depression and not knowing what to do next. Just my 2 cents!
  • Nick from Paramus, NjI always thought it was about getting high. "I don't wanna comedown" and what he sings during the solo "shoot up, shoot up, shoot up, you're high" at least that's what I heard he said.
  • Paul from Toledo, OhTo me it is about finding yourself, and knowing who you are. It expresses happiness not often found in Bush songs.
  • Rebekah from Prince George, VaTo me its about not wanting to leave something it took you so hard to find... Your so happy an if you leave its going to be screwed up.
