Songfacts®:

  • Blaine Johnson (March 2, 1990 – February 9, 2019) was an English rapper who performed professionally as Cadet. The younger cousin of fellow MC Krept, he grew up alongside Konan, Krept, and Redz as part of the Gipset gang. The crew gained a following in the late 2000s with their freestyle videos about gang life and London living.

Cadet began pursuing a solo career as a rapper in 2015, releasing a number of freestyles through underground London-based music channel OSM Vision. He dropped his first mixtape, The Commitment, the following year.

Cadet passed away as a passenger in a taxi during the early hours of February 9, 2019 en route to a gig at Keele University in Staffordshire.
  • "Advice" was released on August 28, 2018. The track begun as an Instagram freestyle, before the West London rapper reworked it as a collaboration with Deno Driz. The pair go back to back on the song, with Deno questioning some of Cadet's decisions to do with women and doling some advice to the younger MC.
  • "Advice" was produced by the brothers Obi Ebele and Uche Ebele, who are known as the production duo DaBeatFreakz. The pair's other credits include two tracks on Alesha Dixon's 2015 album Do It For Love.
  • The song was Cadet's first charting single, originally peaking at #27 on the UK singles chart. It later climbed into the top 20 following Cadet's death.
  • The song references the England midfielder Dele Ali

Don't have your eye on her, like Dele Alli

Ali celebrated a goal for Tottenham Hotspur against Newcastle by doing a strange gesture with his hand over his eye. He later posted a photo of it on his Instagram, which went viral. Cadet and Deno Driz are seen depicting the Dele Alli signature celebration on the single's artwork.
