Songfacts®:

  • A number of the songs on Carried to Dust, including this one, reference Chile, a South American country that has long suffered American foreign-policy machinations. Victor Jara (1932-73) was a distinguished theatre director and political activist who was arrested, tortured and ultimately murdered after the 1973 US-backed Chilean coup that brought down President Allende. Frontman Joey Burns told Uncut magazine that he was, "fascinated by the stories from our travels down to South America."
