Songfacts®:

  • Calum Scott sings on this piano-driven ballad about a relationship that he regrets ending. He is struggling to live without his former lover and wants the ex back in his life.

    I'd climb every mountain
    And swim every ocean
    Just to be with you
    And fix what I've broken
Oh, cause I need you to see
    That you are the reason

Scott explained the story behind the song: "'You Are The Reason' started out as a song about something completely different than what it is now. It was originally written from a fragile place of anxiety and not knowing the cause of it, so the song started to become 'Without A Reason'. But as we carried on writing, we realized how every relationship has difficult times but you stick with it because the love you fundamentally feel for the other person overrides everything else."
  • The track was produced by Fraser T Smith, who helped Adele come up with "Set Fire To The Rain," Taio Cruz create "Break Your Heart" and James Morrison pen "Broken Strings."
  • Calum Scott recorded a second version of the ballad on which he is joined by Leona Lewis. The "Bleeding Love" songstress said: "I remember the day Calum sent me this track, I sat listening at home and had it on repeat. It's one of those powerful songs that touches your heart and such a beautiful ballad, everyone knows I love singing them! Calum's performance on it is stunning and I loved being able to join him to make this duet version."
  • In the music video, Scott strolls down Khreschatyk Street in Kyiv. Along the way, we're treated to a tapestry of personal moments – a man inside a building talking to his anxious partner, a couple gracefully dancing in the streets, a poignant family moment as they bid farewell to their grandmother, and a tender scene of a couple sharing headphones in the back of a taxi.

In September 2023, the video made waves by hitting a massive one billion views on YouTube.

    Over the mountains
    Over the sea
    Here You come running
    My lover to me
When I feel the cold of winter
    In this cloak of sadness
    I need You
Oh the evil things that shake me
All the words that break me
    I need You
    Over the mountains
    Over the sea
    Here You come running
    My lover to me
    Do not hide me
    FromYour presence
    Pull me from these shadows
    I need You
    Beauty wrap Your arms
    Around me
    Sing Your song of courage
    I need You
    Over the mountains
    Over the sea
    Here…
