Songfacts®:

  • "My Mistake" was the first major-label single for Cam, whose full name is Camaron Ochs. After moving from California to Nashville in 2012, she honed her skills as a writer, eventually landing a cut with rising star Maggie Rose. Cam scored her first songwriting credit on a chart-topping record when she co-wrote "Maybe You're Right" for Miley Cyrus' 2013 album Bangerz.
  • Cam explained the song's meaning to Billboard magazine: "Generally, I've made a lot of mistakes in my life, and I think that everyone has," Cam said. "The worst part is when I plan ahead for things that have not happened and I see all the ways those things are going to go wrong. All of that keeps me from doing what I should be doing because I'm so afraid of what might be happening. Instead of trying to avoid all of that, it's a reminder to me that I'm owning it, and I'm happening to life as much as it is happening to me."
  • The song didn't get much heat, but Cam's next single, "Burning House," certainly did, becoming one of the top country songs of 2015 and the only country tune by a female artist to go Platinum that year.
