  • Camilla Cabello first worked on this mournful ballad at a very low moment in her life when she was still in Fifth Harmony. She explained in May 2017:

"I started writing (it) in a hotel bathroom on tour a little over a year ago. I was completely broken during that time, I was in the kind of pain that's uncomfortable to talk about, and it was the kind of chapter you never want to read out loud."

She added: "I couldn't write another song for six months because writing meant I had to feel everything, and I wasn't ready to do that yet. so when I graduated from hotel bathrooms to studios to make my first album, I was making music about everything BUT what I was going through, it was like a secret burning on my tongue and for some reason I could not get myself to say it."

Cabello returned to this song months later and forced herself to confront her feelings. "I realized I wasn't making music just to make an album anymore, I was making this music to heal," she said. "It wasn't until I had made enough songs to listen back to and realized I could hear myself coming back through these songs."
  • Camila Cabello wrote the song with Bibi Bourelly (Rihanna's "Bitch Better Have My Money") and Jesse Shatkin (Sia's "Chandelier").
  • Cabello told Genius about the experience that motivated her to write the song.

"I had a friend and we were so close," she said. "Then it was like literally a day after we didn't even know each other anymore. It was weird. Anyway, I was writing it in a hotel bathroom and I wrote it over this voice memo chord progression that I had in my head. It just sounded too, not what it felt like. It felt like what the songs sounds like now. Before I was like, 'How did we let it all get this far, I don't even know who you are.' I saw the person I initially wrote it about at this thing. I just went into the bathroom. It was like a movie. I was just crying."
  • This was left off the tracklisting of Camila except for on the Japanese limited pressing version, where it was included as a bonus track.
