Songfacts®:

  • The Suddenly album has a theme of the evolution of family relationships. Dan Snaith sets things up on the brief opening track by singing about the responsibilities of love.
  • Snaith inserts into the melancholic synth-lullaby a snatch of his mother singing a nursery rhyme to his sister. The musician explained to Q Magazine March 2020 that she recorded it back in the 1970s. "My parents moved from England to Canada before I was born. My mum would go years without seeing her parents, so would send this tapes back of things like my sister playing piano. When my grandparents passed I got them all digitized. I thought it was beautiful and fits wonderfully into the song. She doesn't actually know she's on there yet. I'm waiting to give her the vinyl so she can turn it over and see the credits."
  • The album title comes from the favorite word of Dan Snaith's little daughter.
