Songfacts®:

  • "Colombia, Mi Encanto" translates as "Colombia, My Charm." This vibrant dance-pop tune, sung by Carlos Vives, pays tribute to the South American country.
  • Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the song for the soundtrack of Encanto. The Disney computer-animated movie tells the story of Colombian teenager Mirabel Madrigal, who is born into a family that possesses magical gifts. "Colombia, Mi Encanto" plays when her 5-year-old cousin receives his gift, which enables him to communicate with animals. The song plays again during the end credits.
  • Carlos Vives is a highly decorated Colombian singer-songwriter who has had a string of hits across the Spanish-speaking world. His songs fuse the accordion-driven vallenato with rock, dance-pop and reggaeton. Miranda tried to channel Vives when he wrote "Colombia, Mi Encanto," so it was a significant moment when the Colombian star agreed to record the song for the film.

"I listened to a ton of his vallenatos and sort of wrote my version of what one of those would sound like," Miranda told Billboard. "And to bring it full circle and have him record it with his band and his musicians, it brings 'Colombia, Mi Encanto' to another level of authenticity."
