  • When Carrie Underwood first received the demo for this Jason White-penned song, she was put off by the title. "My brain immediately went to, like, 'It's a cheatin' song - you know, like, 'affair,'" she explained, "so it actually took me a few days to listen to it."

However, once Underwood did listen to the tune, she fell in love with its "swampiness." She recalled, "This isn't at all what I thought it was going to be. So I turned it up and got sucked into the story."
  • The story-based song delves deep into the amorous adventures of a man and a woman, but with an air of mystery. "You don't really know what happened," Underwood explained. "There's still a lot left to the imagination, which I like, because I feel like people are going to fill in the gaps in their own way."
  • Underwood told The Toronto Sun, this was "the door opener" for Storyteller. She explained: "It was just funky, very, very cool and swampy and there's nothing else that quite sounds like it on the album but it just had this like twang and attitude about it. And then it was easier to write (and pick) songs after that."
  • Jason White is best known for writing Tim McGraw's controversial abortion-themed "Red Rag Top" in 2002. White received a BMI Award, a BMI Million-Air Award and Music Row’s 2003 Song of the Year Award for the track.
  • White told Pop Dust that he penned the song in cabin outside Nashville. "I was building a big stone fireplace, just a project I had been working on for a couple years. I went out there, and I was working on it," he said. "I started just singing the hook; it jumped into my head. Then, I thought, 'Ooo, that's kind of catchy.' I started making up the story."

"I don't really remember what the inspiration of the actual story was, other than I wanted it to be slightly mysterious and not have all the details explained," White continued. "But I still wanted it to be catchy and interesting and something that hit the listener's ear. I remember coming up with certain lines. I also remember I named her Cassie O'Grady because it rhymed with 'southern lady.'"
  • That's Travis Meadows slaying it on the harmonica. He's the songwriter behind hits like Jake Owen's "What We Ain't Got" and Dierks Bentley's "Riser". Meadows recalled his contribution to the track during a Reddit AMA:

"I was minding my own business sitting on the couch and I got a text from Jay Joyce who produced Carrie's record. He said, what are you doing now? I said, nothing. He said, can you come over and play harmonica right now? I said, yes. I drove over to the studio, walked in and he handed me a mic. He hit play and I started jamming. He said, that was awesome, do it one more time. So I did. He said, great you're done. I was back on my couch in 45 minutes. I didn't even know who's record it was till after the fact.

On a side note, Carrie wanted to learn how to play so I gave her lessons that's a heckuva way to spend a day. She's awesome!"
