Songfacts®:

  • Here, Carrie Underwood takes pride in the compatibility between her and her lover. During the first verse, she lists other things that pair well.

Like jet black in a Cadillac
Like Tennessee and a bottle of jack
Dolly in a tape deck on the way back
    To home sweet home

Underwood talks about their relationship in the chorus.

    Denim and rhinestones
You're the cool and I'm the fire
No we're never going out of style

The second verse is an extended simile about Underwood and her lover fitting together "like a classic jean jacket."
  • Underwood released "Denim & Rhinestones" as the follow-up to "Ghost Story" on April 8, 2022. The same writers (Underwood, Hillary Lindsey, Josh Kear and David Garcia) wrote both songs.
  • "Denim & Rhinestones" is the second single from Underwood's album of the same name. So why did she title her album after this tune? "The song 'Denim & Rhinestones' is super fun, with a bit of a retro vibe – we just go together, like a sweet tea and a lemon, like denim and rhinestones," Underwood explained. "You have these things that are great on their own and then you put them together and they just fit. That's how this album feels."
  • Underwood and Garcia co-produced the track, creating a breezy pop-disco production to accompany the romantic country lyricism. Denim & Rhinestones is the third project between Underwood and Garcia. In 2016 they co-produced her release, Cry Pretty, which marked the first time Underwood produced her own album. Garcia and Underwood then co-produced Underwood's 2021 collection of gospel hymns, My Savior.
