Songfacts®:

  • Carrie Underwood has been the voice of Sunday Night Football's opening theme since 2013. Six years in, she recorded a new song for the 2018-2019 season replacing "Oh, Sunday Night."
  • Underwood co-wrote "Game On" with frequent collaborators Chris DeStefano and Brett James. The trio, plus Priscilla Renea, also wrote "Oh, Sunday Night." The threesome, together with rapper Ludacris, penned "The Champion," used during Super Bowl LII and 2018 Winter Olympics coverage.

"We wrote a new song for it, because I feel like they're always open to that, and they're always looking for ways to freshen things up," said Underwood. "So, they always just say, 'Hey! If you've got anything else back there, whatever you're working on, bring it. We'll see how we feel about it.'"
  • Singer-songwriter Heidi Merrill and three others wrote a song titled "Game On" in late 2016. Their tune was pitched to Carrie Underwood's frequent producer, Mark Bright, who was initially interested but eventually told Merrill that Carrie had passed on the track.

When she heard the Sunday Night Football theme song, Merrill was shocked at how similar it is to her "Game On" track. She filed a suit claiming copyright infringement against Underwood, Mark Bright, the National Football League and NBC.
