Songfacts®:

  • "Hate My Heart" is about a woman who's just been through a bad breakup. She hates her heart because it's not ready to let her date again. Now that she's free and single, she wants to go out on the town and meet other men, but "this thing in my chest" keeps beating for her ex and she can't forget him.
  • Underwood co-wrote "Hate My Heart" for Denim & Rhinestones with her regular writing partners David Garcia and Hillary Lindsey, plus Hardy. Garcia contributed to 11 out of the album's 12 tracks and Lindsey eight, but country rock singer-songwriter Hardy is a newcomer to the star's writing team.

"He definitely has just such a cool way of writing that I've respected since the first time I heard some of his stuff that he had written for other people and even some of his own things as an artist that he does," said Underwood of Hardy. "You can immediately tell that he has a special way of saying things. He definitely was a super strong presence in the room that day. We just had a blast writing this song. I feel like it came out very easily."
  • Underwood, Hardy, Lindsey and Garcia wrote the rocking track with her Denim & Rhinestones tour in mind. "'Hate My Heart' was definitely part of my desire to have fun on this album," Underwood said. "I wanted songs that would be exciting to perform live and would fill up an arena, and that's exactly what we're about to do with the Denim & Rhinestones Tour. This one is definitely going to get everyone up on their feet and having a good time."
  • Director Shaun Silva filmed the video on location at Nashville's Wildhorse Saloon. It captures Underwood and her girl squad, who have all been through breakups, on a wild and crazy girls' night out. We also see their alter-egos playing in the all-female band onstage.

Silva also directed Underwood and Jason Aldean's video for their #1 smash hit duet, "If I Didn't Love You."
