Look At Me

Album: Play On (2009)

Songfacts®:

  • This mainstream neo-traditional love song was written by well-established Nashville songwriters Jim Collins (Keith Chesney's "The Good Stuff" and Paul Overstreet (Keith Whitley's "When You Say Nothing At All"). Alan Jackson recorded it, and the song first appeared on the soundtrack to the 2008 Billy Graham biopic Billy: The Early Years. Jackson's version was included on his album 34 Number Ones, but it didn't get much attention. It did a lot better for Carrie Underwood, who included it on her third album, Play On, in 2009.
  • The song wasn't written specifically for the Billy: The Early Years film. "Jim Collins and I wrote that song and I had the demo with just guitar and vocal on my iTunes," its co-writer Paul Overstreet told Songfacts. "It kept coming up, and it always moved me. I got a call that they were making a movie about Billy Graham's earlier life, and they wanted a love song. So I sent that to Renee Bell [at Sony Music] and she sent it to them."
  • Country singer-songwriter Vince Gill sings harmonies on the chorus.
  • "Look At Me" attracted renewed interest after a video of bride Arianna Pflederer singing the song to her husband-to-be, Ryan, went viral in February 2014. Underwood's version was then released as a single.
