Songfacts®:

  • Case/lang/veirs is a collaborative record between Neko Case, k.d. lang, and Laura Veirs with the help of Veirs' husband-producer Tucker Martine (Modest Mouse, My Morning Jacket), This song was begun by Veirs in her children's playroom, and furnished off at Flora sound studios with her husband. "The thing is, Tucker and I don't get to spend much time together," she told Uncut, "so it was great to be, without the kids, bless their souls. I usually only get to see him work once every three years, which is about how often I make a record. The rest of the time, however, people have got their claws sunk in him. I love his patience and his ability to talk an artist through a dark moment."

"You're trying to capture something very elusive, and an artist temperament in the studio can be so fragile, and he's so good with that," Veirs continued. "I would never have the patience for it. I would be like, 'Just sing that song and let's get out of here!"
  • Veirs recalled the story of the song to CBC Music: "I recorded the demo of this with my kids' drum set in their play room. It was June of 2015 and Portland trees and greenery were in full bloom at the time. It was almost like I could see the green of the trees blowing on the breeze into the room. It's a song about the redemptive power of love – it's not a song about salad!"
