Songfacts®:

  • During a trip to New Orleans, McCombs got to know musician and medicine man, Reverend Goat Carson. He asked him to speak the words of this paean to alternative remedies, under McCombs' own sung vocals.
  • Uncut magazine asked McCombs if the song is supposed to be funny. "Of course it should be funny and silly," he replied. "Laughter is the best medicine – it's in the title. I consider him a real medicine man, and as it's a song about recipes for healing, I needed his blessing."
