• This song was inspired by a relationship that Cassadee Pope had, where it took her a long time to spot the red flag. "I kind of let somebody take me on the wrong path for too long, and once I realized that was happening I got so frustrated," she admitted to Taste of Country. "One of my favorite lyrics from the song is 'I'm not a stupid girl, I should have known,' because that is so real."
• Cassadee Pope wrote the song with Laura Veltz and Jimmy Robbins. She recalled to The Boot: "I remember the session, and all of us just kind of sitting around and talking about where we were as far as what we wanted to write that day, and all of us just landed on 'Piano.' I have to give it to Laura: She came in with, 'You played me like a piano.' That was totally Laura, [and] the three of us just grabbed on to that, because we completely understood what that meant, personally and career wise. We've all been through so many ups and downs."
  
  "There have been people along the way, back in the day, that took me off the path and took me somewhere that I didn't realize I was going and I had to kind of stop myself and say, 'Gosh, I can't believe I let this person manipulate me and take me in this direction.' It's such a raw emotion behind the song," Pope continued. "You'll hear that the lyrics are very conversational. We didn't try and get too crazy as far as being poetic; we just sat there and were like, 'Gosh, I'm a smart girl. I feel stupid for letting this person do this to me.' These are lyrics that are actually in the song so it's raw emotion."
