Songfacts®:

  • "One Brick At A Time" is a song from the first act of Barnum, the musical based on the life of American showman Phineas T. Barnum. Like the rest of the songs in the show it was composed by Cy Coleman and written by Michael Stewart. While Barnum is a dreamer, his better half is more practical, and after he begins to have second thoughts about his dubious ventures, his normally skeptical, doubting and most of all disapproving wife Charity begins this inspirational song which is completed by the Company with some impressive choreography that involves throwing and catching bricks, and ends with Barnum himself - played by Michael Crawford in the 1986 release - standing astride two brick walls holding a handful of bricks which he manipulates into an emblem. >>>
