Songfacts®:

  • Most love songs have a guy singing to a girl or vice versa, but the object of veneration in this comedy number from the musical Beauty And The Beast is the man in the mirror.

With music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, "Me" is performed by Gaston to Belle. After presenting her with a miniature portrait, of himself (naturally), he proceeds to throw and chase her around the stage while telling her what a lucky girl she is now that he has decided she will be his wife and bear him half a dozen sons. Although Belle makes one or two vocal interjections as Gaston struts around with the nonplussed damsel thrown over his shoulder, "Me" can hardly be called a duet. >>>
