Gone With The Wind

Album: not on an album (2008)

Songfacts®:

  • The 1939 film Gone With The Wind is generally acclaimed as one of the greatest epic romances of all time. It is based closely on the novel by Margaret Mitchell, and runs to well over three hours. The 2008 musical production directed by Trevor Nunn has music and lyrics by previously unknown Margaret Martin; it is based on the novel rather than the book, and is likewise somewhat on the long side. That is where the similarities end.

One American blogger - Steve On Broadway - wrote he could "only describe [it] as one of the funniest laugh-out loud musicals to come along in ages." Adding "Only thing is those laughs are purely unintentional."

A London critic wrote: "The songs themselves are forgettable in some cases even whilst you listen to them", adding they were like those from The Simpsons but without the self-awareness.

Audiences were similarly unimpressed, and the show was pulled after 79 performances. Arguably the least bad of its songs was the eponymous "Gone With The Wind". Unsurprisingly, that title has been used before. This particular song is used at the end of Act I and reprised at the end of the show, by which time most of the audience had either left or missed their last trains home. >>>
