Album: Legally Blonde (2007)

Songfacts®:

  • This is the second song from the 2007 award-winning stage musical Legally Blonde. Like the rest of the score, "Serious" was written by the husband and wife team of Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin. Both contributed to the music and lyrics. This is a duet between the story's heroine, Elle, and the man it is clear she is intent on spending the rest of her life with. Unfortunately, Warner is not only handsome, intelligent, charismatic, rich and on his way to law school, but a total jerk. Instead of proposing over dinner he dumps her, telling her it's time to get serious - meaning about his future, not theirs. He sees himself as the second coming of John F. Kennedy (presumably without the second coming of Lee Harvey Oswald), and for that he needs a wife who is more Jacqueline Bouvier than Marilyn Monroe.

Less of a Marilyn, more of a Jackie...
Somebody classy and not too tacky

"What?" she asks, in a spoken interlude.

"Okay, that came out wrong," he says.

The song ends with Elle leaving the stage in tears, and Warner alone asking for the cheque. >>>
