Songfacts®:

  • Dulcinea del Toboso was the name given to Aldonza Lorenzo by Don Quixote in the novel by the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616). The delusional hero believes her to be a long lost idealized love, a lost love that was never really found.

In the 1960s musical version which has lyrics by Joe Darion and music by Mitch Leigh, Aldonza is a serving wench at an inn, who alas, serves more than food and drink to her at times coarse clientele.

Don Quixote sings "Dulcinea" to her, and she is at first irked thinking he is mocking her, but soon realizes he isn't.
  • In the 1966 Random House book Man of La Mancha: A Musical Play, "Dulcinea" is listed as the third song performed, although as with many musicals, the score varies with different productions. The song is written in both 6/8 and 3/4 time. >>>
