Songfacts®:

  • "Oklahoma!" is the title song of...Oklahoma!. This was the debut musical of composer Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It was also one of the first if not the first of the new American musicals to invade the British West End after the Second World War. The film version was released in 1955. The theme introduces the film, which is set in Oklahoma at the turn of the 20th Century, and might be described as a hymn to the State. Evidently the politicians thought so because in 1953 it was adopted as the official State Song. >>>
