Songfacts®:

  • If you thought the best things in life were free, think again; the best things in life are dirty. This song from the 1969 musical Paint Your Wagon is performed primarily by Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood as along with a handful of fellow conspirators they tunnel beneath a house of ill-repute in No Name City in pursuit of the gold the clientele have dropped on the floor and that has accumulated beneath the floorboards. Well, who said the Gold Rush would last forever?
  • "Best Things" did not appear in the original 1951 stage version; the plot was significantly different. For one thing, it would not have been possible to portray a ménage à trois in the American theater at that time!
  • Like the other songs for the film, this was composed by André Previn and written by Alan Jay Lerner. >>>
