Songfacts®:

  • The mean green mother of this song is the blood-drinking plant from the Howard Ashman/Alan Menken musical Little Shop Of Horrors. In the film it is sung by Levi Stubbs of The Four Tops (who did not of course appear in the flesh). In the song, the plant reveals itself as an alien invader intent on taking over the world. It is accompanied by its pods, to the horror of shop assistant Seymour, who is doing his best to kill it, while the plant is also trying to kill him.
  • Although it did not appear in the original stage production, "Mean Green Mother From Outer Space" was nominated for the 1987 Academy Award for Best Original Song, but lost to "Take My Breath Away" from Top Gun. >>>
