Songfacts®:

  • According to Max Wilk in the 2007 book The Making of The Sound of Music, "An Ordinary Couple," a song about the Captain and Maria, was cut from the original score of the film. It was replaced by "Something Good" but does appear in some stage productions of the musical.
  • Unsurprisingly, this Rodgers and Hammerstein composition is sung as a duet, and is a fairly ordinary down tempo song. In reality, Korvettenkapitän Georg Ludwig Ritter von Trapp and his second wife, the former Maria Augusta Kutschera, were anything but an ordinary couple. He was of noble birth, nearly twenty-five years her senior, and the father of seven children. She was an orphan who was studying to be a nun when she was sent to teach one of the widowed Baron's daughters. They married shortly, and had two more daughters and a son. The Sound Of Music is based on Maria's memoirs. >>>
