Songfacts®:

  • Casting Crowns frontman Mark Hall penned this stark ballad about the reality couples face after tying the knot. "Marriage is tough," Hall explained. "We bring a lot of fairytales to the picture when it comes to marriage. We bring them to the altar with us [thinking]: 'This is going to be perfect. We don't have to be apart. We can just wake up together every morning and no one is going to have morning breath. We're not going to have any problems.' And then the problems hit and you don't know where to file those into your picture."

Hall added: "The idea I'm trying to say is: 'Can you lay down who you thought I was and love the me that is? Can we take this from where we are now and realize that I can't be that person?' Only God is going to be able to make this work and broken people can be broken together. To me, it's probably the most important song on the record."

  • Slyce1965 from MichiganWe should have known about the song when I was going through my divorce. But fortunately mine didn't survive but the funny thing is I used to describe our marriage to people as we were both just broke enough to be perfect together not realizing how prophetic that phrase was except I've broken this was apparently just irreparable..
  • Michael from IndianaThis song definitely pierces the heart especially when your going through a breakup/ divorce. Unfortunately sometimes we put ourselves 1st instead of God's sacred covenant and choose to be broken apart instead of together. Healing takes time don't rush it.
  • Judy from United StatesMy son and daughter-in-law went through a divorce a few months ago and when I heard Broken Together, I thought to myself that this was written truly for them. I pray everyday that some how my x-daughter-in-law will here this song and listen to these words. Awesome song Casting Crown. It sure did hit home for son and now x-daughter-in-law. I think that we are all some how broken together some just heal and other couples move on.
