Songfacts®:

  • Princelet Street in the East End of London is most famous, or more properly notorious, as being a haunt of Jack The Ripper, and one of its 18th Century houses has earned a handsome income as a period location for its owners from documentary makers, costume dramas and major programs about one of the world's most mysterious (and uncaught) murderers.

It also has a lesser known claim to fame, it was the birthplace of Susannah Constantine, the great-grandmother of Halifax-born singer-songwriter Catherine Howe.

In a March 2010 interview with the Halifax Evening Courier, Howe explained how she came to record the song and album in 2006. Susannah Constantine was born in 1851, and in spite of her own Yorkshire roots, Howe's family have close ties with the capital.
  • "Princelet Street" is an uptempo jazzy number with a saxophone introduction, and was produced and arranged by the guitarist Kevin Healy. It was recorded at Grace Note Studios, Pinner, the Middlesex town which gave the world two other musical talents: Tony Hatch, and Elton John. >>
