Songfacts®:

  • This finger-snapping, mid-tempo dance track finds Celine Dion focusing on self-criticism. She warns her lover that she can't fully commit herself to their relationship until she tackles her faults.

    I got my own imperfections
I can't hold your heart when I'm fixin' mine

Celine changes her tune during the bridge, asking her man whether he's willing to accept her with all her issues.

They made me who I am today
And they won't ever go away
Can you love them the way that I love you?

Celine doesn't want the romance to end in the mist of her trying to become a better person.
  • The song was written by:

Pop singer-songwriter Lauv, whose "I Like Me Better" was a worldwide hit in 2017. Songs he has co-penned for other artists include Charli XCX's "Boys" and Cheat Codes and Demi Lovato's "No Promises."

American DJ-producer DallasK, who is best known for co-penning several of Fifth Harmony's hits including "Work from Home" and "Down."

Songwriter Michael Pollack, whose other credits include Zara Larsson's "Ruin My Life" and Maroon 5's "Memories."

San Francisco-born and Los Angeles-based artist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Nick Perloff-Giles, who performs under the name of Wingtip.

    DallasK also produced the track.
  • "Imperfections" was released as a promotional single on September 18, 2019. The song topped the sales and radio charts in Quebec, and peaked at #69 on the Canadian Hot 100.
  • The readers of Billboard magazine voted this as their 2019 song of the year. Celine Dion featured overwhelmingly on the poll with three other Courage tracks in their top 10: "Courage" (#4), "Flying on My Own" (#6) and "Lying Down" (#9).
  • Lauv originally penned the song for himself, but it didn't fit with what he wanted to put out on his album. So, when he was approached by Celine Dion to pitch tracks for Courage, Lauv chose this track. He explained to Officialcharts.com:

"With 'Imperfections,' I tried to write from an authentic place in my life but it ended up being just a little less personal and a little bit less of 'I need to sing this.' Then Celine heard it and she loved it."
