Songfacts®:

  • "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" was Celine Dion's first single released in America. Born in Quebec, she released music in her native French throughout the '80s, starting with her debut album when she was 13. She quickly became a star in Canada and France, then conquered Europe when she one the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988 representing Switzerland. In the late '80s she worked hard to improve her English, and in 1990 put out her first English-language album, Unison, which includes "Where Does My Heart Beat Now." It took a few months for the song to catch on, but it climbed to #4 in March 1991, giving Celine her breakthrough in America, a country that quickly embraced her.
  • The song is a ballad of longing, with Dion dealing with a fallout from a breakup. She always their hearts would beat together as one until the end of time; now she wonders where her heart will beat now.

With a soaring chorus, it's right in her wheelhouse vocally, a great way to introduce her to an American audience.
  • The song was written by Robert Johnson and Taylor Rhodes, two Nashville-based songwriters. They previously teamed on a minor hit for Peter Wolf called "99 Worlds." Rhodes later co-wrote the Aerosmith hit "Cryin'."

The producer was Christopher Neil, who helmed hits like "All I Need Is A Miracle" for Mike + the Mechanics and "Don't Shed a Tear" for Paul Carrack. Celine Dion used a team of songwriters and producers on the album, most notably David Foster.
  • Seven years later, Celine Dion seemed to answer the question she posed in this song with her Titanic hit "My Heart Will Go On."
  • The music video is pretty basic, just showing Dion performing the song. This gave the American audience a chance to get a good look at her when it played on VH1.
  • "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" stayed in Celine Dion's setlists through most of the '90s and returned in the 2010s when she included it in her Las Vegas residency Celine, which ran from 2011-2019.
