Songfacts®:

  • "Do You Remember" finds Chance the Rapper reminiscing about his younger days as he recalls past summers and simpler times.

Velcro to shelltoes, things that we will outgrow
Used to rock South Pole, summers taking the 6 bus to South Shore
Never sold out but now we out-sold
That was the summer I learned to love the great outdoors

Chance remembers fondly his old Velcro shoes, comparing them to the "Shelltoes" he wears now (another name for Adidas Superstars). His other happy memories include catching the number 6 bus that connected downtown Chicago to the South Side and hanging out at the Southpole clothing store.
  • The song's nostalgic look at Chance's youth in his native Chicago is reminiscent of several of his other songs, including "Same Drugs" and "Summer Days."
  • Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard sings the song's hook.

Do you remember how when you were younger
    The summers all lasted forever
Days disappeared into months, into years
    Hold that feeling forever

Chance and Gibbard first met backstage at the 2016 Bonnaroo Music Festival, where Death Cab For Cutie were performing. Gibbard recalled that they had "a bit of a mutual admiration society going on" and as they hang out in his dressing room, he was impressed with Chance's knowledge of his band's music. The possibility of a collaboration was mentioned, but it wasn't until 2019 that Chance got back in touch and asked him to be part of "Do You Remember."
  • The song was co-produced by Justin Vernon. The Bon Iver frontman previously collaborated with Chance's friend Kanye West on his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album.
