Songfacts®:

  • Charli XCX originally wrote "Blame It on Your Love" in Los Angeles with long-standing collaborators Stargate in the mid-2010s. She kept the tune on the backburner for three or four years until she recruited Atlantic Records labelmate/UglyDolls co-star Lizzo to drop some rhymes. "Until Lizzo was on it, it wasn't perfect," Charli explained to BBC Radio 1's Annie Mac. "She just pulled it together. I mean, her energy is just so amazing."
  • The upbeat song finds Charli XCX apologizing to her lover for upsetting him.

Every time you get too close I run, I run away
And every time you say the words, I don't know what to say
Back, back to the beginning, really wish that I could change
    I do, I do, I do

Charli blames his love for her for her hurtful behavior.
  • Lizzo's guest verse gives an outsider's perspective saying it's Charli's lover's fault for feeling hurt. He shouldn't have fallen so hard for her allure.

Gotta blame it on the, blame it on the
Blame it on the juice Blame it on the juice

Lizzo is alluding to her own breakthrough single "Juice."
  • When Charli XCX released her EP Pop 2 back in 2017, fans were puzzled by the name of its final song, which was simply titled "Track 10". Despite this, the tune was highly acclaimed, with the Pitchfork site placing it at # 92 on its list of the 100 Best Songs of 2018. It's now clear "Track 10" was a preview as "Blame It on Your Love" is a fully fleshed out version of the cut.
