Songfacts®:

  • In February 2017, Charli XCX broke a boy's heart, and in doing so ruined a relationship. This melancholic introspection of regret is the singer's plea of reconciliation following the disintegrated romance.

    Sorry I broke you down
    Sorry I tore your heart
    I ripped it all apart

Charli asks for forgiveness from the guy she shattered emotionally. She regrets ending their cherished relationship the way she did.
  • Charli is joined on the song by American singer-songwriter Clairo and Korean-American singer-producer Yaej. Charli first worked with Clairo one afternoon in early 2019; they came up with several songs together (not including this one) in the English singer's LA studio. Charli had found it easy to write with her, so once she came up with the demo for "February 2017," she sent it over to her new friend. Clairo responded with a string of ideas for the tune.

Charli previously worked with Yaeji when she tapped her for a remix of her track "Focus." She sent over the idea for "February 2017" to Yaeji, who responded with a verse. Her contribution features as the song's outro, during which she asks gently, in Korean, if it's too late to apologize.
