  • I'm just living that life
Von Dutch, cult classic, but I still pop

Von Dutch is an American fashion brand named after Kenny Howard, an American artist and pinstriper who went by the nickname "Von Dutch." After Howard's death in 1992, the trademark for his name was licensed to various companies.

French designer Christian Audigier helped popularize the brand in the early 2000s. Von Dutch gained popularity in the US and attracted the attention of such celebrities as Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott.

This turbo-powered tune plays like bravura tweets fired off after a glass of champagne. It showcases Charli XCX's unapologetic attitude as she addresses jealousy from others, while acknowledging her own wealth and fame.
  • Charli told The Face the song is a throwback to her teens, when she was on MySpace and "first began thinking my taste was cool."

It's about being an object of gossip or obsession for people around you and embracing it. "I was sharing my process with friends and people who don't make music, and [the lyrics] were becoming conversational, like things I would text people," said Charli. "It was beginning to feel gossipy in a fun way, so I leant into it."
  • Charli wrote the song with Easyfun during the session that produced her exhilarating Barbie movie joyride "Speed Drive." Easyfun previously collaborated with Charli on several tracks from her 2017 mixtape Pop 2.

"It was quite a chill session," Easyfun told NME, "probably about four hours, to give you a sense of how quickly Charli can work."
  • Charli first performed "Von Dutch" at her Boiler Room set in Brooklyn on February 22, 2024. She released it on February 29, 2024, as the lead single to her sixth studio album, Brat.

"I was born to make dance music," said Charli. "I came from the clubs. XCX6 is the album I've always wanted to make."
  • Shot by fashion photographer/director TORSO at Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris, the video shows Charli wreaking havoc in the airport terminal.
  • Here are two more songs that namecheck Von Dutch:

2009 "Lee Majors Come Again" by Beastie Boys ("I see your grandpa in Apple Bottom jeans. A Von Dutch cap Ugg boots to match.")

2013 "Lay It Down" by Lil Wayne ("Y'all 'bout as hot as Von Dutch.")
  • Charli XCX hooked up with longtime collaborator and producer A.G. Cook and TikTok superstar Addison Rae for the song's official remix. The updated version sees Charli trading lines with Rae. The pair debuted the remix on June 15, 2024, when Charli brought Addison on to the stage during her show at the Shrine Auditorium in LA.
  • Charli sang "Von Dutch" and "Guess" at the Grammy Awards in 2025, admitting in a recorded segment that the songs were not at all appropriate for the show. Indeed, she turned the stage into a pulsating club with a hail of undergarments.

"Von Dutch" won the award for Best Dance Pop Recording, and Brat won for Best Dance/Electronic Album.
