  "I produced this [record] after an unsuccessful party in L.A., which is what all these records are based off… I have my little Juno keyboard… I just hit one of these settings here and played a B minor chord. It just made me think of Wham! It made me think of 1988. I put that chord down and I immediately thought of Kehlani."
• Puth and Kehlani previously worked together when they released a steamy cover of Drake's 2016 hit single "Hotline Bling." The "Attention" singer said the process of getting the R&B songstress to contribute to the track felt totally natural.
  
  "You know when you meet somebody and you just know that you're going to be friends with them for a really really long time?," he said. "That was her when I met her. She's just such a warm and outgoing person and just such a good distinct voice."
• The RJ Sanchez and Brendan Vaughn-directed video finds both Puth and Kehlani attracting the romantic interest of a female character. "I wanted to make a visual that represented how far we have come in society," Puth tweeted of the LGBTQ theme in the clip. "Love is love."
• Puth was inspired to pen this tune after hearing an Ariana Grande song. He told Entertainment Weekly:
  
  "I had grown up playing jazz music - John Coltrane, Miles Davis - and I always wondered why those chord changes were so absent in Top 40 radio. I wanted to make a song like 'Done for Me,' which doesn't have the typical four-chord changes in pop. What pop song on Top 40 radio right now climbing the charts has a diminished chord as a second chord?! Then I hear the new Ariana Grande single, 'No Tears Left to Cry' and the chord changes in the verse are so interesting and not typical, and I just wanted to be part of that. In 'Done for Me,' it's a late '80s synthesizer that takes the lead. It's ambient, but danceable, at the same time."
