Songfacts®:

  • The 21st single release by Chas & Dave is a straightforward tribute song. Chas Hodges and Dave Peackock are Londoners born and bred - although not actually Cockeys by birth.

Harry Champion (1886-1942) was a well known music hall star who was born in their adopted East End. His most famous recording (along with "I'm Henry The VIII, I Am") was "Any Old Iron?" to which the song alludes. Also mentioned in the song is Gus Elen, a Champion contemporary.

Released on the Rockney label and backed by "Ain't No Pleasing You," it failed to chart in the UK, probably because by 1984 a song about the old time British music hall was too remote to click with most of the record buying public. >>>
