Songfacts®:

  • Margate on the South East Coast of England is to Londoners Chas & Dave what Blackpool was to Northerner George Formby, but while the Formby ditty "With My Little Stick Of Blackpool Rock" fell foul of the BBC censor, "Margate" is so totally innocuous that even the Moral Majority could not find fault with it: jellied eels, bucket and spade, and a pint of beer by the sea. And bring the whole family along, Granddad included.
  • Co-written by the duo, "Margate" is in 6/8 time, and was published by Chasdave Music of London, copyright 1982. The single was released as a picture disc on Tower Bell Records backed by "Give It Gavotte." >>>
